Traffic Analysis

RTG provides traffic analyses of various roadway facilities and networks including freeways and directional interchanges. RTG is proficient in the use of various software programs including VISSIM 4.0, TSIS-CORSIM, SYNCHRO, SIDRA, PASSER II, PASSER III, TRANSYT, and Highway Capacity Software. Our traffic analysis capabilities provide the basis for sound engineering decisions in both planning and PS&E projects.

Loop 1604, Bexar County - Alamo Regional Mobility Authority
IH 35 North to US 90 West
CORSIM analysis of three alternatives (added general purpose (GP) lanes, managed lanes outside of GP lanes, managed lanes inside of GP lanes) for adding capacity to 35 miles of urban controlled-access freeway. Project included the Loop 1604 interchanges with IH 35, US 281, IH 10 West, and SH 151.

 

US 281 - Loop 1604 Interchange, San Antonio - Alamo Regional Mobility Authority
Utilized VISSIM to analyze interim and ultimate conditions for the planned PS&E to add direct connectors and other improvements to an existing three-level diamond interchange between two controlled-access facilities. The animation was prepared in 3D on digital ortho-photography for agency meetings and public presentation.

 

Loop 1604, Bexar County - TxDOT San Antonio District
IH 10 East to SH 151
Utilized CORSIM to analyze proposed conditions on 33 miles of controlled-access freeway/ tollway. Mainlanes (both tax and toll lanes), ramps, interchange connectors and collector-distributor roadways were analyzed to determine the optimal layout for PS&E development by others.

 

IH 10, Bexar & Kendall County - TxDOT San Antonio District
US 87 North of Boerne to Camp Bullis Road
Utilized CORSIM to analyze alternative ramp patterns and lane balance as part of the schematic development of 19 miles of freeway from US 87 North to De Zavala Road. Project also included analysis of the directional interchange with Loop 1604 and analysis of the 6.5-mile section from De Zavala Road to IH 410 to suggest bottleneck improvements required for the 2030 design year.

 

IH 10 - Loop 1604 Interchange, San Antonio - TxDOT San Antonio District
IH 10 - Camp Bullis Road to IH 410
Utilized CORSIM to analyze alternative ramp patterns and lane balance as part of the schematic development of the directional interchange with Loop 1604. Project included analysis of the 6.5-mile section from De Zavala Road to IH 410 to suggest bottleneck improvements required for the 2030 design year.

 

IH 35 Northeast Corridor Study, San Antonio - TxDOT San Antonio District
IH 35 - North of Loop 1604 to US 281
IH 410 - South of IH 35 to IH 35
IH 10 East - West of Loop 13 to East of IH 410

Utilized CORSIM to analyze existing and proposed conditions of a total of 21 miles of urban controlled-access freeway widening and reconstruction. Multiple alternatives were studied including various combinations of general-purpose lanes, express lanes, reversible lanes and HOV lanes. Project included analysis of the directional interchanges of IH 35 with Loop 1604, IH 410 North (Fratt Interchange) and IH 410 South.

 

US 69/ 96/ 287, Beaumont - TxDOT Beaumont District
South of IH 10 to US 69/287-US 96 Split
Traffic studies to assist in the preparation design schematics for 10 miles of urban controlled-access freeway widening and reconstruction. CORSIM was utilized to model interim year traffic to prepare an implementation plan outlining a phased implementation of the ultimate improvement and needed opening year for the various identified construction phases.

 

SH 121 Segment 5/ Dallas North Tollway (DNT) Interchange, Collin County - North Texas Tollway Authority
SH 121 - West of Legacy Drive to Preston Road
DNT - South of Legacy Drive to North of Gaylord Parkway

Utilized CORSIM to analyze interim and ultimate conditions for the PS&E to add direct connectors and other improvements to an existing three-level diamond interchange between two controlled-access tollways. Analysis included 2 miles of SH 121 and 2 miles of the DNT.

 

SH 121 South, Tarrant and Johnson County - TxDOT Fort Worth District
FM 1187 to US 67
Utilized CORSIM to analyze operations for 13 miles of four-lane divided controlled-access tollway on new-location, including operations of the opening day layout of two-lanes with two-way traffic (one side of the ultimate section). Also performed iterative runs to estimate year in which ultimate facility must be in place to avoid breakdown in operation of the initial layout.

 

IH 45, Galveston - TxDOT Houston District
South End of Galveston Causeway to 59th Street
Utilized CORSIM to analyze existing and proposed conditions to assist with the schematic design of 2.5 miles of urban controlled-access freeway reconstruction to add capacity and raise the facility above hurricane tidal action.

 

IH 45, Harris County - TxDOT Houston District
Beltway 8 to FM 518
Utilized CORSIM to analyze alternative ramp patterns and lane balance on 10 miles of urban controlled-access freeway widening and reconstruction. Project added general purpose and frontage road capacity and included as both reversible and concurrent-flow HOV lane sections.

 

SH 99 - Westpark Tollway Interchange, Harris County - TxDOT Houston District
Traffic analysis utilizing CORSIM of a planned directional interchange. Revisions to the planned improvements were identified and an implementation plan outlining sequencing and needed opening year for the improvements was prepared.

 

SH 45, Austin - Texas Turnpike Authority
East of IH 35 to SH 130
Utilized CORSIM to analyze proposed conditions and assist in the preparation of design schematics of 4 miles of urban six-lane controlled-access tollway.

 

Loop 1 Field Change, Austin - TxDOT Austin District
South of Parmer Lane to Wells Branch Parkway
Utilized CORSIM to analyze operations of ramp and access improvements to the Loop 1 Tollway. The improvements initially modeled were as shown on a design schematic provided by others. An alternative layout was proposed and approved, resulting in over $2 million in savings.

 

SH 71, Austin - TxDOT Austin District
IH 35 to US 183
Utilized CORSIM to analyze alternative ramp patterns and lane arrangements for 5 miles of controlled-access freeway to determine the optimal layout for PS&E development by others.

 

IH 27, Amarillo - TxDOT Amarillo District
IH 40 to Western Street
Utilized CORSIM to analyze proposed conditions on 5 miles of controlled-access freeway. Mainlanes, ramps, frontage roads and intersections were analyzed to determine the optimal layout for the PS&E development by others.

 

Loop 375, El Paso - TxDOT El Paso District
North of IH 10 to US 62/ US 180
Utilized CORSIM to analyze existing frontage roads and proposed mainlanes for 8 miles of urban controlled-access freeway. Various ramp patterns and intersection improvements were studied to optimize the schematic layout.

 

US 83, Cameron County - TxDOT Pharr District
Hidalgo County Line to Harlingen
Utilized CORSIM to analyze proposed conditions on 8.7 miles of controlled-access freeway from the Hidalgo County line to Harlingen to determine the optimal layout for schematic development by others.

 

SH 6, Brazos County - TxDOT Bryan District
FM 2818 to Green's Prairie Road
Utilized CORSIM to analyze existing operations and assist in the phasing of improvements to the interchange of SH 6 with Texas Avenue (BU 6). Proposed work includes ramp revisions and intersection and frontage road improvements (including conversion to one-way traffic) along 2 miles of SH 6.

 

Loop 13 (Military Drive), San Antonio - TxDOT San Antonio District
New Laredo Highway and South Flores Street
SYNCHRO evaluation of traffic signal timing and progression and intersection analysis on approximately six miles of urban five-lane arterial roadway. The study also included traffic crash analysis and evaluating access management techniques such as raised medians and consolidation of driveways to improve operations and safety.

 

FM 1957 (Potranco Road), Bexar and Medina County - TxDOT San Antonio District
Loop 1604 to FM 471
Utilized SYNCHRO to analyze existing conditions and proposed design year intersection layouts for the reconstruction of 11 miles of rural two-lane roadway to an urban four to six-lane divided section.

 

FM 1960 at Eldridge Road, Houston - TxDOT Houston District
Utilized SYNCHRO to analyze existing conditions and propose design year intersection and access management improvements needed alleviate congestion at a high volume urban intersection. 3D modeling of the intersection was prepared on digital ortho-photography for public presentation.

 

FM 1960, Humble - TxDOT Houston District
BU 1960 to the Lake Houston Bridge
Utilized PASSER III, TRANSYT and NETSIM to analyze proposed conditions for the reconstruction of 6.1 miles of primarily rural four-lane roadway to an urban six to eight-lane divided section. The cost-benefit of an overpass alternative over a high volume intersection was also analyzed and included with the recommended alternative as a phased improvement.

 

FM 521, Harris County - TxDOT Houston District
Beltway 8 to south of FM 2234
Utilized SYNCHRO to analyze existing conditions and proposed design year improvements for reconstructing 1.5 miles of rural two-lane roadway to an urban six-lane divided section. Capacity improvements to the FM 521-FM 2234 intersection and the addition of railroad grade separations for both FM 521 and FM 2234 was included.

 

FM 518 at FM 2094 and FM 270, Galveston County - TxDOT Houston District
Utilized PASSER III, TRANSYT and NETSIM to analyze existing conditions and to propose interim and long-range improvements to improve traffic flow at closely spaced high volume intersections.

 

FM 2100, Crosby - TxDOT Houston District
Diamondhead to South of Church Street
Utilized PASSER III, TRANSYT and NETSIM to analyze intersection and access road operations and assist in the alternative analysis and preparation of design schematics for a railroad grade separation and 2 miles of a five-lane facility.

 

FM 1093, Fort Bend County - TxDOT Houston District
FM 723 to FM 1464
Utilized PASSER III, TRANSYT and NETSIM to optimize intersection geometry for the preparation of design schematics for upgrading 8 miles of two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided facility.

 

Spur 41, Sugarland - City of Sugarland
At US 90A
Utilized CORSIM for the traffic analysis and alternative studies of interim and long-range improvements to relieve congestion at a high volume intersection and provide for a railroad grade separation.

 

Loop 363, Temple - TxDOT Bridge Division and Waco District
Utilized CORSIM to analyze four distinct roadway options to reduce a perceived weave conflict at the US 190/ Loop 363 junction as part of a UPRR bridge replacement project.

Utilized CORSIM for the traffic analysis and prepared six separate IAJR's for FHWA approval:

PR 22 (JFK Causeway) User Cost Study - TxDOT Corpus Christi District
Waldron Road to Aquarius Drive
Performed a user cost analysis to determine the contractor time overrun penalties required for a construction project for 4.7 miles of urban freeway, rural divided highway and urban roadway.

 

IH 410 User Cost Study, San Antonio - TxDOT San Antonio District
Ingram Road to Callaghan Road
Performed a user cost analysis to determine incentive/disincentive user costs for a construction project which required six phases and twelve sub-phases for the TCP.
